Most diagnoses are all kinds of things it could be, and when you get rid of all of them, once they’re out of the picture, then Parkinson’s is what was left. ” Did you make that connection right away? Did it take a while? You were so used to being exhausted. RT: Well, yeah, I knew it would affect it. The first month obviously Amy and the girls knew, but then I informed my editors at the syndicate. ” I didn’t really think much past that . . I mean, I figured I could still draw . . NG: Degas, one of your heroes, who, when he had vision problems, started working in a different fashion.
Despite his love of books, classical music, and movies, Richard’s primary interest has always been drawing. By the time Richard was five, his father was bringing home stacks of drawing paper so Richard would have a ready supply in the pantry. Like most boys, he specialized in monsters, cars, and rockets, but gradually he realized he had a talent that other children lacked. “At a certain point you realize that you are the one who is being picked to draw the posters at school,” he recalled. As his gift became more apparent, his parents enrolled him in art classes at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, outside his regular school.
Richard and the Post were approached by Lee Salem of the Universal Press Syndicate in 2007, and agreed to syndicate the strip. It started out running in over seventy newspapers. Richard continued doing his Almanac and freelance illustration for a while. In 2011, he won the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year. It is not surprising that with this kind of workload, Richard began to feel exhausted. “I thought maybe I was just tired or sick. ” His problem persisted, and even worse began to show up in his pictures: “I remember noticing one day that I was having trouble drawing circles.
