Place the background right side up on the work surface. For hand appliqué, we like to work on top of our sandpaper board. The sandpaper will keep the background from shifting as you position appliqué pieces on the block. For fusible appliqué, work on your ironing surface. 2. Place the overlay right side up on top of the background. 3. Line up the pressed-in center lines in your background with the center lines of the overlay. D TIP The first time you use the overlay for a block, mark an X on the block in the same corner as on the overlay so that you always know how to position the overlay.
3. Trace around the template. The sandpaper board will hold the fabric in place while you trace. Make a line you can see! Be sure to draw the line right up next to the edge of the template. It won’t matter if the line is wide. It gets turned under in hand appliqué and is cut off in casual appliqué and fusible appliqué. Trace onto fabric for hand appliqué. Trace onto paper backing for fusible appliqué. Place templates with as many edges as possible on bias. 4. For hand appliqué, cut out each appliqué piece, adding a 3/16˝ turnunder allowance.
Place the stocking template on top of the stack. Make sure the toe is pointing in the direction you want it to. Pin the stack if necessary to keep it from shifting. Trace around the stocking template onto the top fabric. Cut through all the layers of fabric on the drawn line with a rotary cutter or shears. 9. If you are not adding a cuff, place the stocking, right side out, inside the lining. The stocking and the lining will be right sides together. Match the top raw edges of the lining and stocking, and pin them together.
