Each participant completed the Facebook Intensity Scale disclosing how many friends they had, how long they spent on Facebook and some general thoughts. Next the participants were interviewed on video and then their brain activity was recorded in various situations. For example, one scenario was that the participant was told that their video interview had been shown to another person and that person thought highly of them. They were also told that another person had received positive feedback. The NA was activated more strongly when the participants received positive feedback about themselves than when they heard that another had received it.

The ACC is responsible for selecting the correct response and focusing attention appropriately. The ACC also has roles in many autonomic functions that are part of the control system that acts mostly below the level of consciousness to control things such as blood pressure and heart rate regulation, in addition to rational cognitive functions such as decision making, empathy, impulse control, emotion and reward anticipation. The dorsal and ventral parts of the ACC are connected to different other areas of the brain and their functions reflect these connections.

When we are anxious our amygdala gets activated. However, we must remember that the amygdala detects all emotions. It processes them in order of significance, and fear is very significant. It is connected to the cognitive parts of the brain, specifically the prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). So strong are the links that when the amygdala becomes unsettled for any reason often so does the ACC. When the amygdala is activated through anxiety, the knockon effect is that areas of the prefrontal cortex and ACC become disrupted, meaning that short-term memory, attention and our ability to make riskbenefit assessments are all affected.
