Each Ethernet card has a unique address. This is called a MAC address. The following is a MAC address taken from a 3COM 3c509 card. • 00:AO:24:47:F3:CD You probably won't need to know anything about MAC addresses if you have a network at horne. You will if you are part of a wider network. The network support people will generally keep a database of MAC addresses and corresponding IP addresses. 6 million hosts. 0 o 16065 networks with 65534 hosts. 0 o approximately 2 million networks with up to 254 hosts.
There were network problems with one of the systems that were resolved with the replacement of the 3Com 3C509 card. 4 distribution. This was straightforward. The only problem occurred with the network set up. It was not possible to access the extern al network. Curiously the machine could be seen by other Installing Linux machines on the network using ping. We will cover this utility (which is one of the Unix commands) in a later chapter. One of our network team tested out the various network set-ups.
