Ayn› zamanda bir etnograf olan S›rvantsdyants ise daha sakin ve ironik bir üslûba sahip. Kitab›n birinci cildi, bafllang›çta uzun bir sunufl yaz›s› olarak planlanm›flt›. Ancak 1877-78 Osmanl›-Rus harbinin hemen ard›ndan bölgeye giden rahiplerin raporlar›nda bahsedilen konular›n çeflitlili¤i ve Ermenice bilmeyen okurlar için yabanc›l›¤› nedeniyle sunufl yaz›s›n›n hacmi geniflledi ve ortaya birinci cilt ç›kt›. Neredeyse rahiplerin raporlar›n›n toplam›na yak›n bir önsöz yazm›fls›n›z... Rahiplerin bahsetti¤i pek çok olaya tarihsel bir ba¤lam kazand›rmak gerekiyordu.

Ancak güçlü bir afl bize bu türeden fleyler düflündürür. Romanda anlat›lan da böyle bir aflkt›r: “Yaflam›na ve ölümüne” . Do¤as›na pek de uygun düflmeyen bir biçimde “yaflam›na”, tarif edilemeyecek imkâns›zl›kta: “ölümüne”. Tan›m aral›¤›n› en geniflinden seçer, bu nedenle aflkt›r zaten. “Seni kazanmak veya bu dünyadan göçmek” der, “nihayet bu dünyaya aitizdir, ve nihayet art›k bu dünyaya ait de¤ilizdir” der. Ancak aflk kadar keskin bir duygu, “içimizdeki son tabiat kal›nt›s›”, bizi dinozorlar ve kar›ncalar dünyas›na tafl›yacak bir yüksek atlay›fla olanak sa¤lar.
