The volume of a petrol tank is usually given to the nearest litre. It is of no practical use to give such a volume to the nearest cubic centimetre. When writing a number we often give the accuracy by stating the number of significant figures or the number of decimal places used. These terms are now explained. Significant figures Suppose we are asked to write down the number nearest to 857 using at most two non-zero digits, or numbers.
