2 41 The Question of Emplacement Mechanisms Essentially it is for two reasons that so many years were necessary to accept the theory of overthrusts. The first, as we have already indicated, is above all of a psychological nature. It was difficult to accept a theory which completely challenged what was known, or what was believed to be known, about the subject of the structure of mountain chains. The second reason is much more serious because it relates to a scientific argument that even the holders of the new concept were not able to contest or disprove.
Usually, structures such as folds and faults form perpendicular to the displacement direction but it is useful to keep in mind that it can be otherwise. To construct cross-sections perpendicular to the structures is therefore a hypothesis which must be justified by structural arguments. Either way this rule of construction of the cross-section of the final state, there should be conservation of area in the plane of section between the initial and final states (Goguel 1952, p. 144). This hypothesis indicates on the one hand that there is a conservation of volume during the deformation (which is generally the case for rocks which have undergone diagenesis) and on the other hand that there has been neither lengthening nor shortening in the plane perpendicular to the section.
This last point is corrected according to information which allows restoration to the initial state. As we have already indicated, the geometrical solutions which are used are not necessarily correct but aim to cancel out geometrical inconsistencies of the cross-section constructed in the field. In this case, the balanced cross-section proposes another interpretation of the hidden structure in the field, an interpretation which is more satisfactory than the initial starting cross-section. It is advisable firstly to attach a vertical reference line, or a pin-line, in the autochthonous part of the starting cross-section.
