T h e topographic survey commenced in 1913 with the intention of generating a m a p series at 1:100 000. Progress was halted by the outbreak of World War I, and the first m o n o c h r o m e (brown) printed sheet was not issued until 1927. Multicolour reproduction was subsequently introduced, and the maps, each displaying an area of 30' longitude by 30' latitude, were based on the Athens meridian and employed the H a t t conformai conic projection. T h e series was scheduled to cover the whole territory on 130 sheets, but not all of these had been completed before the beginning of World W a r II.
