After the attack, the work was painstakingly restored and returned to its place in St. Peter’s, just to the right of the entrance, between the Holy door and the altar of Saint Sebastian, where it is now protected by a bulletproof acrylic glass panel. 34-metre marble statue of the Biblical hero, a favoured subject in the art of Florence. Originally commissioned as one of a series of statues of prophets to be positioned along the roofline of the east end of Florence Cathedral, the statue was placed instead in the public square, outside the Palazzo della Signoria, Florence’s seat of civic government, where it was unveiled on the 8th of September, 1504.
Among the first pieces completed were the two Prigioni — renamed the “slaves” only in the nineteenth century — destined for the lower part of the funerary monument, next to the pilasters that framed the niches containing the Victories. Their poses were determined by the needs of this architectural setting, so from the front their view was important, while from the side the views received less care than usual. All the Prigioni produced in the studio of the artist were eliminated from the monument in its final version, when completed in 1542.
However, the apparent incongruity of the stance of the bearer on the right remains problematic. Interestingly, there is an old story that Michelangelo received a letter from his father at the time he was painting this panel. The letter informed the artist that he should abandon whatever he was doing as a great piece of marble had arrived for him. This, of course, was the marble that would become the David.
