So with adolescents one can’t contemplate a psychoanalytical therapy carried out in the systematic and organized way one would hope to do with an adult, or that one generally succeeds in doing with children.

In this way he joins and becomes part of the community of adolescents, which is fundamentally a rebellious one whose aim is to take over power. The way in which he tries to do this is by trying to be successful, earning money, achieving power, influence, etc. And naturally the central point of all this concerns the achievement of sexual freedom. Now he has reached the conclusion that sex is a sport, the preferred sport of adults and something which has precious little, or nothing, to do with making babies.

From this stems the adolescent preoccupation with clothing. It is due to these primitive phantasies of entering into the object, that accompany projective identification, that there emerges a gender confusion. This confusion is expressed in the adolescent’s worry about the development of his body and appropriate sexual characteristics. The gender confusion is aggravated by the entry into bisexuality at the time of adolescence. These two kinds of confusion— between male and female and between good and bad—when combined, cause confusion between good sexuality and perverse sexuality.
