Her attentiveness to the daily and detailed ways of friendship have gladdened not only my life but the lives of hundreds of women worldwide who have passed through her doors. Preface In 1980 when I began writing A Passion for Friends, feminists were not talking much about women’s friendships. It was almost as if we thought that feminism itself, automatically made us friends. This assumption, as many of us learned, was rather naive. Like others, feminists do not automatically become friends. , a sisterhood that was created in the struggle for women’s liberation did not mean that feminists shared a common world beyond the struggle.

There is a long tradition in classical male philosophy—from Plato through Emerson—of philosophical ideas on friendship. Of course, the esteemed philosophers were almost exclusively concerned with friendships between men. Most of them felt that friendships between women were nonexistent. This book attempts to distill some of the ideas that women have had about female friendship while also constructing new ideas. These ideas have been scattered in both the work and the lives of many different women throughout the ages.

It is not an objective, value-free theory, but rather is invested with a certain passion, belief in, and commitment to female friendship. At the same time, it is not separated from the objective material facts of women’s affinities for each other. This work seeks to drive no wedge between well-documented and well-researched scholarship about women’s friendship on the one hand and passionate inquiry on the other hand. They must come together. Thus, this book is part of a critical idealist and critical materialist feminist tradition of philosophy (see Chapter V).
